Pastor Diogene Pierre
Pastor Diogene Pierre is the Haitian director
of Starfish Ministries in Haiti. He administers the daily operation
of the ministry there. He is on the front lines of reaching out to needy
Haitians every day. We believe God has brought us together with Pastor Diogene and his wife, Leonette, to accomplish His purposes in the country
of Haiti.
Pastor Diogene was born on April 23, 1952 in the village of Tricotte.
At four months of age Diogene was very sick and his father went to
a voodoo witch doctor to obtain some medicines. However on his way
home, the father was reminded of earlier children who had died while
using the witch doctor methods and decided to bring Diogene to a Christian
missionary nurse instead. The nurse gave Diogene some medicine and
prayed for his healing and Diogene recovered. As a result, Diogene’s
father and mother became the first Christians in the village of Tricotte.
Diogene became a Christian at eight years of age. Almost
immediately, he began sharing his faith with others. At a very
young age he was called Pastor Dio by his classmates at
school. Diogene could often be found on the school grounds
with a group of children around him and he would be preaching
the good news of Jesus Christ. Many of his classmates trusted
the Savior as a result of Diogene’s boldness.
As he got older, Diogene began to sense the call to go to
Bible School. That’s not what he had in mind and resisted for
some time. He wanted to go to the Bahamas to work and support
his brothers and sisters. He was convinced that pastors didn’t
make enough money to live on.

He finally submitted to the call but didn’t expect to
continue on due to the lack of tuition money. When he started, he
had only enough money for the first few weeks and told the headmaster
if he was supposed to be here, the money would be provided. The headmaster
asked where it would come from and Diogene responded that he didn’t
know but God would provide if this is where God truly wanted him.
Three months into Bible School, Diogene was called to the headmaster’s
office. He expected to be released for lack of tuition money but instead
was informed that money had been provided - not only for the first
year but for all three years of Bible School. God provided through
an anonymous donor. Diogene saw God’s hand on his life and chose to
follow Him anywhere God wanted him to go. Over the
next few years, Diogene married Leonette, they had two daughters
and a son, and Diogene pastored churches. Times were very
difficult but God always supplied. God used this faithful
servant to touch the lives of many Haitians.
We met Pastor Diogene in November of 1992. I was a part of a
team from Hillcrest Chapel and Childcare International. Diogene
was the director of Childcare International. Part of the team’s
assignment was to help construct an orphanage building for
Childcare International. Pastor Diogene and I began to develop a
friendship at that time. Over the next five years, that
friendship grew as I visited Haiti several times with Childcare.
Then when Childcare invited us to take over their orphanage
ministry in 1997, Pastor Diogene became the director of our
newly founded Starfish Ministries. |
Pastor
Diogene’s responsibilities have grown significantly these last
few years as the SFM outreach ministry has grown. He is now the
official pastor of churches in Tricotte, Port-au-Prince, Drigeon,
David and Ravine. Diogene, along with his wife, directs the
orphanage ministry in Tricotte. He also oversees the school
director, Norius, and the school ministry. With the growth in
our school and church planting ministry, we always have two or
three construction projects in process which Diogene also
oversees.
Diogene is a very humble, gifted man of God. We are blessed to
have the opportunity to partner with him. It is so good to see
God at work, using Pastor Diogene’s availability to Him and as a
result seeing so many needy Haitian’s lives changed. God is at
work in Haiti and He is working in and through Pastor Diogene to
accomplish His purpose. God’s Kingdom is growing in Haiti.
Praise be to God!! |
